Why China doesn’t create a dispute along the Borderline between Uttarakhand and Himachal?

Why China doesn’t create a dispute along the Borderline between Uttarakhand and Himachal?

Chinese civilisation is also among the quite ancient in the world. Starting from 2000 BC (Xia Dynasty) to 1000 BC (Shang Dynasty) to the golden period of Buddhist China to now Communist China.
China has seen a lot of transitional changes. In today’s modern era, Communist China keeps quite an aggressive stance on its so-called historical regions which they think were theirs once. All of their claims are seeming to be either distorted or deviated from the much-known facts. They are so much distorted that it becomes an irony to say that China shares border with 11 countries and has borders disputed with 16 countries. It is like a bully in a classroom disturbing others even three benches away.

A lot of times you must have heard, that there is a situation of conflict arising along the India-China Borderline. And there are many locations along the borderline which come under the limelight for such collisions at LAC (Line of Actual Control/Sino-India Border). In last few years, aspiration, ambition and assertion of China has increased towards not only India but also Taiwan, Vietnam and many countries. But the most has been faced by us whether it’s Galwan Clash or Doklam Stand. We also had a clash history with China in 1962 and 1967 for the same reason. No doubt, Conditions at LAC between India and China are different from LOC (Line of Control) between India and Pakistan. Aksai Chin is in control of China after 1965 which is an integral part of India, where China Claims the Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh area into its own territory which is a part of India.

The term LAC was coined in 1959 in letters written by Zhou Enlai (China) to then-Indian Prime Minister Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru. It was marked as an Informal Ceasefire line after the 1962 war resolution and took official mutual recognition in 1993. India claims LAC to be 3488 KMs whereas China claims it to be 2000 KMs only. The First Western sector border between India and China was considered as LAC but from the 90’s all the shared borders with China are considered to be LAC. LAC is mainly divided into three different fronts’ eastern, western and middle. The eastern sector also known as the Mcmohan line was marked between British India and Free Tibet in the Shimla Agreement of 1914 in which Assam, Burma and Himalaya were included. It’s an 890 KMs borderline. China challenges the legality of the Mcmohan Line as they thought they were not considered represented in the agreement though Tibet was a free country in that time period. They always considered Tibet as a part of their historical region.

Dispute along the borderline of the middle front is a little less comparing the eastern or western front. The western front is among the most active disputed area between India and China starting from the west of the Karakoram Ranges to Demchok in the southwest of Ladakh. Demchok is a frequently conflicted area between India and China where clashes and standoffs between Indian Army and Chinese Soldiers is a quite frequent thing. One such clash happened in a nearby Galwan Valley in 2020 in which 20 Indian soldiers lost their life and around 40-45 Chinese soldiers were killed. India has now outright rejected the Chinese theory of LAC where China claims an unreasonable part within Indian Territory too.

While the borderline along Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh are not been a major border flash point for a long, but in recent times they entered in Barahoti region in Uttarakhand but went back immediately. They entered the same area first in 1954 but they have to pass through Tun-Jun-La-Pass towards the northern part of Nanda Devi national park. Due to the alertness of the Indian Army (ITBP), China finds it hard to start another conflict in such a remote area or to start any sort of confrontation. The terrain of the area of Borderline was so difficult for the Chinese Army that Patrolling with typical vehicles is next to impossible and horses were used to execute such misadventures. There may be a few more attempts made by the PLA (People’s Liberation Army/China) to infiltrate the Barahoti region but the deployment of additional troops in the area has kept the Chinese aggression at bay. In July 2015, china tried an incursion in a Village of Kinnaur District, Himachal Pradesh where they opposed the development of infrastructure by the government. But this time the issue was resolved by diplomatic means. This is what China does to create an issue in a new area and ignite the issue in international politics. But again, the Indian government and Army have firmly stood their ground to make China feel India’s Sovereignty. Over a period of time, other than mentioned incidences, not much aggression has been shown by the Chinese side due to India’s firm stand along the borderline of Himachal and Uttarakhand letting the locals of this state enjoy the utmost safety.

Also, it is evident that tourism in the state of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand has increased with the passage of time. Infrastructural development has taken a huge course of action attracting more tourists, property investors and businesses to flourish.  Especially in the field of Real Estate Investment, Angel Investors or property invetors to Big Firms, all are trying hard to make a space in these hilly areas. People also invest through Fractional Ownership where they are buying a brick or a small part of a very big property and earning rental income through their property investment. Fractional Investment in land is indeed a revolutionary form of real estate investment which gives a high return in less period of time while enjoying ownership of land in beautiful hilly areas.
